Wednesday mornings are creative mornings because we spend about 45 minutes painting bird houses! What a terrific way to give back to the birds by providing them shelter... for a nest, from a storm, from a predator. Adding bird houses to your yard is a great way to attract certain species to your surrounding habitat. The houses the Bird Nerds paint are designed for Eastern Bluebirds, Black-capped Chickadees, White Breasted Nuthatches & Tufted Titmouses. These are not the only species drawn to them however...
It is often the case that House Sparrows take up residence in them as well. I have four nest boxes in my .23acre yard and from what I've seen...two of them are inhabited by House Sparrow families. What'cha gonna do?
I was anxious to get across Route 6A as well so we could hike the Lee Baldwin Trail, which we were able to do today. We saw SO many Fiddler Crabs along the marsh section of the trail and they are FUN to watch! We also had a wonderful & CLOSE visit with a single Pectoral Sandpiper who flew in from out of nowhere! Awfully cute...
Our Beech Tree forest walk cooled us off and I asked the Bird Nerds to appreciate the way nature surrounding us affected our senses. Clearly we see and hear the birds, but we also can appreciate the breeze through the marsh reeds and the Beech boughs and the smell on the trail was floral and so pleasant! We could feel how cool we got when we reached the protection and canopy of the trees. We even snuck in a cozy few minutes on a huge rock. I asked the Bird Nerds to think about what it was like in these woods about 200 years ago... when there were no cars, computers, roads, air conditioning, cell phones, tv... I asked them to imagine what it was like to survive in such a place and what would they do? There is an exceptional lookout from this rock in the woods and when you look back through the trees, the rock is very well hidden. Yes, even huge rocks could provide excellent protection for humans and all sorts of creatures long ago. (double click photos to enlarge)
